ASTM B912

Understanding ASTM B912:

ASTM B912 is an internationally recognized standard specification for passivation of stainless steel using Electropolishing. ASTM B912 outlines criteria on surface preparation, electropolishing, post electropolish cleaning and passivation testing of stainless-steel components. Following the ASTM B912 helps ensure that the customer will receive the product they want by following an industry standard.

ASTM B912 Breakdown:

  1. The standard covers the ordering information needed, so that Ultraclean Midwest will have a clear picture of what our customers need from their products. Information like desired appearance, required finish, surface characteristics and metal removal.
  2. When specified by the customer, Ultraclean Midwest can pre-inspect parts for visual defects such as pits, roughness, striations, or discoloration.
  3. Surface preparation of components is critical in the electropolishing process. Parts must be free of any dirt, oil, grease or other contaminations used in the manufacturing process which could hinder the electropolishing process or damage the component. ASTM B912 references the ASTM A380/A380M when cleaning and preparing parts for the electropolish process.
  4. Post dip cleaning is essential to ensure the customer will receive the final product they desire. Acid salts and acidified water must be removed completely from the component, followed by a DI or RO water spot free rinse.
  5. There are several testing methods outlined in the ASTM B912 to test for passivation of the component. One of the quickest and most effective methods is the copper sulfate test, that, when specified, Ultraclean Midwest can provide along with being visually inspected as well as measured with a profilometer to ensure the desired finish was achieved.

Closing:

The ASTM B912 provides an accepted practice for performing electropolishing, eliminating the need for custom, duplicative operating procedures. It ensures that components and parts go through a repeatable and reliable process that is consistent. Ultraclean Midwest maintains these standards throughout the facility through regular testing, auditing and process monitoring.
